What a hog roast from us actually involves

Plenty of people can hire out a hog roast machine. That isn't what we do. We turn up with the pig, the machine, the serving counter, the team, the sides and everything needed to feed your guests properly — then we cook it, carve it, serve it and take it all away again at the end.

The pork goes on well before your first guest arrives. It roasts slowly for hours until the meat pulls apart and the skin has turned to crackling, and by the time we open the counter it's been filling the place with the smell of Sunday lunch all afternoon. Guests queue, watch it being carved and get it straight onto a plate or into a soft roll with stuffing and apple sauce. Nothing is carved hours in advance and left to sit.

It's a relaxed, generous way to feed a crowd, and it works for surprisingly different events: a wedding in a barn, a company summer party on a business-park lawn, a 50th in the back garden or a village fete with a queue round the green.

Three ways to serve a hog roast

The same roast can be served very differently depending on the event and how formal you want it to feel.

Hog roast rolls

Hand-carved pork in soft rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Quick to serve, easy to eat standing up, and ideal for evening wedding food, fetes and big staff parties.

Hog roast buffet

Carved pork served onto plates with a spread of salads, potatoes, breads and sauces. The most popular choice when the hog roast is the main meal of the event.

Served to the table

For weddings and more formal dinners, we can carve and plate at the counter and serve to tables with sharing bowls of sides. We'll talk through staffing for this style.

What comes with the pork

A good hog roast is as much about what's around the meat as the meat itself. Every menu includes the classics — sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling — and you choose the rest to suit the event and the time of year.

Most people pick two to four salads or sides. In summer that might be homemade coleslaw, a mixed leaf salad, tomatoes with red onion and herbs, and a potato salad. For an evening do or a cooler month, fries, sweet potato fries or buttered new potatoes tend to go down better. Our guide to hog roast side dishes goes into more detail, and the hog roast menu shows sample packages.

On every hog roast

  • Whole pig, slow-roasted on site
  • Hand-carved to order
  • Crackling, stuffing and apple sauce
  • Fresh rolls or plated service
  • Your choice of salads and sides
  • Vegetarian and vegan mains available
  • Serving counter, staff and clear-down

Catering for vegetarians, vegans and other dietary needs

Almost every event has guests who don't eat pork. We plan for that from the start rather than treating it as an afterthought. Vegetarian and vegan mains — halloumi, grilled vegetable skewers, plant-based sausages or a seasonal alternative — are cooked separately and served from their own clearly labelled area.

If a significant number of guests don't eat pork, a lamb roast or a BBQ menu alongside the hog roast is often the best answer. Tell us about allergies and dietary requirements when you book, and have a look at our allergen and dietary information.

Events we cater with a hog roast

Hog roasts suit almost any event with a crowd to feed. These are the ones we're asked about most.

How it works

Booking a hog roast with us is straightforward. Most of the organising is done by email before the day.

  1. Tell us about the event

Send the date, postcode, rough guest numbers and the kind of food you have in mind. A few lines is plenty to start.

  2. Get a tailored quote

We'll suggest a menu, service style and timings that suit the event, and send a clear written quote. Tweak it as much as you like.

  3. Confirm the details

Final numbers, dietary requirements, access, parking and timings are agreed in writing ahead of the day, so there are no surprises.

  4. We cook, serve and clear

We arrive early, cook everything fresh on site, serve your guests from our counter, and leave the space clean and tidy.

What we need from you on the day

Not much. We need a reasonably level area for the machine and serving counter — grass, hardstanding or a patio all work — and a route to it that we can wheel equipment along. We'll ask about gates, steps, parking and how far the van can get when you enquire.

We bring our own cooking equipment and gas. For evening events or sites without power, lighting and shelter are worth thinking about in advance; our outdoor catering checklist covers the practical bits most hosts forget.

Hog roast, lamb or BBQ?

All three are cooked fresh on site. This is how they usually compare.

Hog roast catering FAQs

Do you just hire out the machine?

No — we're a full-service caterer. We supply the pork, cook it on site, carve and serve it, bring the sides and sauces, and clear everything away afterwards.

How many people will a hog roast feed?

We size the roast to your guest numbers and menu rather than selling a fixed pig. Portions depend on whether it's the main meal or evening food and what else is being served. Our guide on how many people a hog roast feeds explains how we plan quantities.

How long does a hog roast take to cook?

A whole pig roasts for several hours, so we arrive well before service. We'll agree an arrival time and a serving time with you in advance.

Is there a minimum number of guests?

It depends on the date and location. For smaller gatherings, a BBQ or a smaller joint can be better value than a whole pig. Ask and we'll suggest the most sensible option.

Can you cater indoors?

The roast is cooked outdoors, but we can often serve indoors — for example carving outside and serving from a counter inside a marquee, barn or hall. It depends on the venue's rules.

How much does a hog roast cost?

Price depends on numbers, menu, staffing, location and date. Our hog roast cost guide explains what affects the price, and quotes are free.
