Hog roast and BBQ caterers for Essex

Essex is a bigger and more varied county than its reputation suggests. There are commuter towns on the Central line and the Elizabeth line, post-war new towns built around large business areas, a long estuary coastline, and a quiet, rolling north-west of thatched villages and old barns. Almost all of it has space outdoors, and that is what a hog roast needs.

We turn up with everything: the roasting machine, the serving counter, the team, the salads, breads, sauces and sides. The pork goes on well before guests arrive and is carved to order, so nobody is eating food that has been sitting under a lid. If pork isn't right for the crowd, a whole lamb roast or a BBQ is just as easy, and lots of Essex events run two of them side by side.

Events across Essex

Broadly, the county divides by direction. The south-west, closest to London — Loughton, Epping and Brentwood — is large gardens, sports clubs and family celebrations, with Epping Forest and the green belt giving it a surprisingly rural feel. Along the A127 and A13, Basildon and Southend-on-Sea bring business-area staff events and seaside parties. Mid Essex, anchored by Chelmsford, is offices, schools and weddings in equal measure.

Head north and the landscape opens up. Around Colchester, Braintree and Saffron Walden there are converted barns, farmland marquees and village greens, and the catering questions shift from office car parks to field access and generators. We plan for both, and we ask about the site before we quote.

Pork, lamb and BBQ options

A whole pig with crackling, stuffing and apple sauce is the classic; a spit-roast lamb suits pork-free guests and summer weddings; and a BBQ gives everyone a choice. Many Essex events combine two. See our hog roast catering and spit-roast lamb pages for how each is cooked and served.

BBQ catering in Essex

A BBQ is often the better fit for staff lunches, school fairs, club days and family parties with plenty of children, because people can choose: burgers, sausages, chicken, halloumi and plant-based options, with salads and fries on the side.

We can run a BBQ on its own or next to a hog roast, which keeps the queue short at larger events. The BBQ catering page explains how it works and the BBQ menu has example packages.

Weddings, corporate events and private parties

Weddings

Essex barn weddings are a big part of our year, particularly in the north and west of the county where old timber-framed barns and farm venues are common. Some couples want the hog roast as the wedding breakfast, served buffet-style or taken to tables with a full spread of salads and potatoes. Others keep a formal meal and have us carve fresh pork rolls in the evening, when the dancing has worked up an appetite.

Marquees on family land, farm venues and country houses all work well. Our wedding hog roast page covers evening food, lamb as an alternative, and how we plan for vegetarian, vegan and other dietary needs across a mixed guest list.

Corporate events

The county has a lot of employers, from the office districts of Chelmsford and Brentwood to the business parks and industrial estates of Basildon and Harlow. Summer staff parties, family fun days, client barbecues and Christmas lunches make up a good share of our Essex diary.

Work events need a fast queue, a clear plan for dietary requirements and someone who will talk sensibly to your facilities team about access and set-up. That's how we run them. See corporate catering and our guide to planning a corporate BBQ for more.

Private parties

Big birthdays, anniversaries, christenings, engagement parties and street get-togethers are where a hog roast feels most at home. It gives the party a centrepiece, guests drift over to watch the carving, and the host gets to enjoy their own afternoon.

Most Essex gardens are fine for our set-up, though side access and parking are worth checking before the day. Browse private party catering and birthday party catering for menu ideas.

Example Essex events

Illustrative examples of how we plan the catering for different kinds of event.

A barn wedding in north-west Essex

Around 110 guests at a converted barn outside Saffron Walden. Carved pork with crackling and a whole roast lamb for the wedding breakfast, four salads and buttered new potatoes, then fresh pork rolls with stuffing and apple sauce at 9pm from the same roast.

A staff summer party in Basildon

Several hundred staff across two shifts on a business-area site. A hog roast counter and a BBQ running together to keep the queue short, with vegetarian and vegan food cooked and served separately and every dish labelled.

A 60th birthday in a Loughton garden

About 70 guests, a narrow side passage and a sloping lawn. We cook on the drive, serve from a gazebo on the patio, and take all the equipment and rubbish away when we leave.

Sides and dietary requirements

Every menu comes with the salads, sides, breads and sauces that turn a roast into a proper meal — homemade coleslaw, leaf and tomato salads, potato salad, fries or sweet potato fries, and new potatoes in cooler months. Our guide to choosing your sides has ideas.

Vegetarian and vegan mains are cooked separately on request and clearly labelled, and allergen information is available for every dish. Read our allergen and dietary information before booking if any guests have allergies.

Practical details

We cover the whole county, including Southend and Thurrock. When you get in touch, tell us the postcode, where a van and trailer could park, and roughly how far that is from where you'd like the food served.

Some Essex venues keep approved-supplier lists or have rules about gas, open flames and generators, and public spaces such as parks and seafronts usually need the landowner's or council's permission. Send us any venue requirements and we'll confirm what we can do before you book.

Hog roast catering in Essex: FAQs

Which parts of Essex do you cover?

All of it — from Loughton and Epping on the London side to Colchester in the north-east, Saffron Walden in the north-west and Southend on the estuary. Give us the postcode and we'll confirm.

Can you cater a field or barn venue with no kitchen?

Yes. We bring our own cooking equipment, counter and serving kit. If the site has no power or running water we'll talk through what's needed, such as a generator, before you book. Our outdoor catering checklist is a useful starting point.

Is a hog roast or a BBQ better for an Essex staff party?

For big headcounts we often suggest both, from two serving points, so the queue moves quickly and there's plenty of choice. For smaller teams either works on its own. Our hog roast vs BBQ guide sets out the differences.

How much does a hog roast cost in Essex?

It depends on guest numbers, the menu, staffing and the site. We quote each event individually rather than publishing a flat price. Our guide to hog roast costs explains what affects it, and quotes are free.
